Brick manufacturing giant, Corobrik, is set to see investments bridge the R1 billion mark after announcing the construction of a second R250 million plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
The new plant will run alongside its new R800 million factory in Driefontein, Carletonville.
Speaking at the second South African Investment conference in Sandton last week, Corobrik CEO Dirk Meyer said the company has invested over R500 million at the Driefontein plant, which will be in production by November next year.
“Next year we intend to start commissioning the first kiln and drier and from January we’ll be doing dry runs. From September we will commission our second kiln and drier. The idea is to be in full production by November.”
Approximately 1 000 jobs have been created during the construction of the plant.
Another 60 permanent positions will be created once the facility is fully operational.
Meyer said the use of South African companies to build the new plant was critical in their decision to implement the project.
“What is particularly important about this project is that, whilst we are using German intellectual property, most of the building and construction is being done by South African companies.”
Meyer also announced that the construction on the new plant will commence once the Driefontein facility is in operation.
