The new R4.2-billion Walvis Bay container terminal is due to come on line at the end of August. By April 2018 it had reached 96% completion, according to Namport. A team of expatriate trainers is assisting with the training of the ship-to-shore gantry crane operators on advanced simulators in the port ahead of the inauguration that will double its capacity to handle all cargoes, according to Elias Mwenyo, business development manager at Namport.
The “game-changing” new terminal will help position Namibia as the gateway for trade between the world and its land-linked Southern African Development Community (SADC) neighbours. This project will make Walvis Bay an attractive hub port for shipping lines serving the West African coast, he says “There is big interest from shipping lines because the facilities in the new terminal will be able to turn vessels around faster,” says Mwenyo.
