New boiler to cut CO2 emissions

Fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing company Unilever expects to reduce its C02 emissions at its Maydon Wharf plant by over 30% through the use of its new R50- million biomass boiler which uses sustainable fuel.

“The boiler cost R50m to install and we estimate that it will provide a saving per annum of around R17m. This will reduce the facility’s carbon footprint,” said Unilever South Africa executive vice-president Luc-Olivier Marquet, speaking at the launch earlier this month.

Marquet added that the biomass boiler would ultimately lower the amount of electricity used in production at Maydon Wharf.
