In light of the decision by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to relocate its head office to Ngqura, Freight News has analysed volumes through the different South African ports from figures provided by Transnet. What they show is that together, the two ports in the Eastern Cape – Port Elizabeth and Ngqura – account for around 16.6% of the cargo handled through South African ports.In 2020 Ngqura handled just over 559 000 TEUs – far short of its design capacity, which is two million TEUs a year
