The R60-million road maintenance project on National Route R410 in the Eastern Cape – between Lady Frere and Quiba – has been completed.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) noted that the seven-month project had extended the lifespan of the road’s surface and would improve safety.
“Before the project began, existing roads in the area were showing signs of deterioration in the form of potholes, cracking and stone loss,” said Sanral southern region manager, Mbulelo Peterson. “There was also a need for improved signage and pedestrian safety measures.”
Some 16 small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) had participated in the project, she said. More than half of the SMMEs were majority women-owned and the project involved contracts valued at over R15.3 million.
