National carrier faces government subsidy withdrawal

National carrier, Air Namibia, has been urged by the government to secure its own funding for monthly expenditure, including the leasing of planes.

Permanent secretary for the  Ministry of Works and Transport, Willem Goeiemann, said in a letter to the airline that the central government would be unable to pay any subsidy to the company this month  due to a "very limited ceiling" (in terms of funds allocation) received from Treasury.

Air Namibia spokesperson Paul Nakawa acknowledged receipt of the letter noting that the carrier was engaging the government on this matter. He said the lack of subsidy from government could potentially affect the operations of the airline.
