Namibian roads set for multi-million rand upgrade

The B2 highway in Namibia.

Two frequently used roads between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund - the B2 highway and the MR44 behind the dunes - will be upgraded into dual carriage highways.

The upgrade of the two roads, which is expected to cost R958 million, was launched by the Namibian Minister of Works and Transport, Alpheus !Naruseb,,earlier this week.

He said in a statement that the upgrade was expected to be completed within three years and would be constructed in two phases.

“To stay regionally and internationally competitive we have to develop reliable transport infrastructure that meets the requirements and demands of the 21st century," !Naruseb said, pointing out that Namibia was strategically positioned as a gateway for import and export to and from landlocked countries in the southern African Development Community (SADC) region, such as Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
