New SA competition in the Japanese market is helping to batter Namibia’s rock lobster industry, according to The Namibian. About 98% of Namibia’s lobster catch is exported to Japan. It is “in dire straits”, said the report, after a season in which just over half of the total allowable catch was caught. A fluctuating exchange rate, a flat Japanese market, and rough weather during the season, have also added to the distress.
