Multi-billion rail line for East Africa’s central corridor

The presidents of Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, and presidential representatives from Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya, have announced plans to build a standard gauge railway line to replace the existing Central Line.

This is part of the Central Corridor, a multi-modal trade and transport link between Tanzania’s Port of Dar es Salaam and the neighbouring landlocked countries.

The Tanzanian government and the World Economic Forum (WEF) have appointed the US financial advisors, Rothschild, to be the transaction adviser for the 2 561 kilometre rail line – which is projected to cost the equivalent of over R91 billion.
