MSC to topple leading rival in TEU capacity?

Shipping line Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) may soon overtake leading rival Maersk with its share of the world’s largest fleet, if the orderbook is anything to go by.

Friday’s Alphaliner Top 100 report – based on fleet and orderbook TEU capacity available on board operated ship – showed APM-Maersk leading the current capacity stakes with just over 3 million TEUs (a 15.7% share of the total world fleet), followed by MSC (close to 2.7m TEUs with a 13.4% share) and CMA CGM with over 1.7m TEUs (8.9% share).

However,  Alphaliner puts MSC’s order book at an increased capacity of just under 700 000 TEUs (54 new vessels), which would see it topple the Danish company off its top post. Maersk’s current orderbook (38 vessels) is for around 475 000 TEU.
