Mozambique´s Mozal may start exporting aluminium to the Netherlands

The aluminium ingots produced in Mozambique by the Mozal aluminium foundry may be exported to the Netherlands, according to Dutch minister for foreign trade and development cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen, reports Mozambican newspaper Correio da Manhã. According to the newspaper, the minister did not mention quantities or the date for the start of the operation, but noted only that contact had been made with Mozal and the Mozambican authorities and “is going well.” Mozal’s shareholders are mining group BHP Billiton (47.1%), the Mitsubishi Corporation (25%), the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of SA (24%), and the Mozambican state (3.9%). Construction of the facility began in 1998 and ended 15 months later, six months ahead of schedule. It cost US$1.2 billion to build, which was US$100 million less than expected, and has capacity to produce 250 000 tonnes of aluminium per year.
