The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, has called on members of the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to transfer the control of Eskom to his department following the ongoing instability at the national energy supplier.According to media reports, the minister used Saturday’s NEC meeting to push for the transfer of Eskom from the Department of Public Enterprises to his, stating that the power utility would be better managed under his department.Several NEC members echoed Mantashe’s claims, blaming the performance of the public enterprises department, and Minister Pravin Gordhan in particular, for the shortcomings at Eskom. Since the meeting, members of the NEC have been tasked with deciding whether or not the scrapping of the department is feasible with ANC study group calling for an investigation into the performance of the country’s public enterprises. As part of the investigation, the study group will look at numerous entities to transfer to other departments, with failing national carrier, South African Airways, on top of the list. In the meantime, at the first Eskom board meeting under the leadership of newly appointed interim chairman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, he said the board of Eskom "remains committed to the execution of the company’s turnaround plan", Eskom said on Sunday.FTW was awaiting comment from the Department of Public Enterprises at time of publication.
