The Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) is working with authorities to keep the routes in and out of OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia) open today following a notification yesterday (Wednesday) by the Gauteng Metered Taxi Operators Committee (GMTCO) that it intends to march to the Gautrain head office in Midrand today.
Protesters are expected to gather in the vicinity of Ortia and shopping malls on the East Rand by around 09h00 this morning and proceed to the Gautrain head office in Midrand.
Routes that are expected to be affected include:
- The R21 Engen One Stop at Ortia;
- The R21 at Olifantsfontein Road;
- The R21-R24 split;
- The R24 at Barbara Road;
- The N3 at the Gillooly’s interchange;
- Eastgate Mall; and
- East Rand Mall.
“We are staying in close contact with the metro authorities and the South African Police Service in order to keep the routes into and out of the airport open,” said Ortia spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Keuler, adding that protest action of this nature was not “entirely predictable”.
