Loss of power imports increases load shedding risk

Koeberg Power Station.

Eskom’s power system is taking strain following a technical fault on one of the eight converters at the Apollo Substation in Midrand, causing a loss of 220 MW of power imports from Mozambique.

According to a press statement issued by Eskom, there are indications that a valve reactor overheated at the operation, which will increase the probability of load shedding.

However, Eskom noted that Unit 2 at Koeberg Power Station had been synchronised back into the grid, adding a further 930 MW of capacity.
