ALTHOUGH IT does not involve the SA trade, the news of Lloyd Triestino opening a Trans-Atlantic service linking the US and Europe is an interesting development in the history of the line, according to a spokesman for local agents Green Africa Shipping. Founded in 1836, the line had virtually become a non-vessel owner by the late 1900s, mostly slot-chartering space with other lines and consortia. The purchase of the state-owned company by Evergreen a few years ago has however pumped new life into the line which today has a fleet of vessels bigger than it ever previously owned. “Their advancement is phenomenal for an old established company, whose fleet was virtually destroyed during World War 2,” said the spokesman.. “And they are now certainly climbing back up on the ladder as a world contender.”
