In the hold to hold exhibition Kevin Mayhew United Links in Spartan recently perfected the real art of forwarding when it handled the airfreight of local exhibits valued at over a million rand for an exhibition at the Museum Bochum in Germany. The museum is presently hosting an exhibition of South African art. United Links had to pack the often fragile artworks to withstand the rigours of the trip after a long process to eliminate which art would both definitively represent the talent of the country as well as handle the difficult trip, according to Bei Venter, the owner of the logistics company specialising in the packaging and freight of fine art for exhibitions responsible for the move. The Johannesburg branch manager of United Links, Tammy Seita, said the contract presented its staff with a significant challenge. The company entrusted export controller Ernest Mbele to take responsibility for the consignment. “Apart from the specialized packaging they had to make certain that the cargo would clear customs without any problems on its return as they are not items that you want to have leaving your control at any one time,” says Seita. On its return each piece will be individually returned to the artists around the country.
