In FTW’s Cross-Border
feature published in April,
Bruce Marshall of Maersk
Line promoted the use of
the through bill of lading
on shipments destined to
countries north of the SA
border.
There are certainly
benefits to this transport
document, but shippers
need to make themselves
aware of the conditions of
carriage, and the limits the
shipping line carrier places
on its own liabilities in
the case of delays, damage
and losses at all stages of a
multimodal journey.
Where freight
forwarders are involved,
due consideration should
also be given to the use of
the Fiata multimodal bill
of lading with its more
accommodating set of
conditions.
