LEP INTERNATIONAL has set up a joint venture with RTT International in South Africa, operating under the name of LEP International.
The move follows the termination of LEP's agency agreement with Renfreight (FTW April 3, 1998).
While LEP will focus on sales and marketing, RTT will co-ordinate local operations.
Domestic distribution and warehousing specialists, the RTT Group recently expanded into international freight forwarding and customs clearing with the establishment of RTT International, headed by Gerry Robinson, who will also head up the joint venture company.
This agreement with RTT International marks the return of LEP's personal presence in the Republic following the closure of LEP South Africa in 1986, said Andrew Bernard, LEP director responsible for South Africa.
RTT's domestic coverage and experience ideally complements our international capability and we shall be placing considerable emphasis on developing sales, both in South Africa and within LEP globally.
Joint m.d. of the RTT Group, John Hartwell, has welcomed the development. Our position domestically is well established and we have already embarked on a programme of expanding our international business.
Access to LEP's worldwide network will enable us to considerably accelerate that expansion. We shall, moreover, be linking with LEP's global IT system, FAST 400, which will add further to the benefits we can offer our clients.
The RTT Group was founded 18 years ago and is headquartered in Johannesburg with branches countrywide. It employs 1400 staff and has assets in excess of R100-million. LEP International is owned by Denver, USA-based Geologistics Corporation. According to Robinson it is the largest non-asset based global logistics provider, headquartered in North America. It has 1000 service centres in 75 countries.
