The Komatipoort inland container depot (ICD), run by Dubai logistics company DP World, has become the first dry port on the vital Maputo Corridor.
This follows its licensing by the South African Revenue Service (Sars) as an approved bonded container depot.
The dry port will offer customers the full spectrum of intermodal and warehouse services.
It’s also close to comprehensive customs and banking infrastructure, facilitating the clearance of goods at Komatipoort.
Christian Roeder, CEO of DP World Maputo, said: “The approval of our Komatipoort facility as a bonded container depot means that international container imports landed at the Port of Maputo and destined for the South African hinterland can now be moved under bond to Komatipoort, where full customs clearance can be provided and made ready for delivery across South Africa.”
He said the primary aim of the facility was to make the hinterland’s supply chain faster, more reliable and provide total cost savings.
“The dry port’s strategic location, full service offering, and seamless link via the corridor to DP World Maputo’s modern and efficient container terminal, where there is no vessel and port congestion and with fixed berthing windows available to major shipping lines, offers customers considerable transport savings and the avoidance of delays for consignees in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng,” according to a statement.
News of the dry port comes almost a year after DP World Komatipoort began operations in August 2019.
