The South African Police
Service (SAPS) and
the Consumer Goods
Council of South Africa
(CGCSA) will soon
formally establish a joint
Consumer Goods Crime
Risk Initiative (CGCRI)
to “holistically and
systematically “ tackle
crime across the entire
value chain.
Speaking at the
Special Interest Group
(SIG) Transport Forum
held in Johannesburg
last week, CGCSA
head of department,
Dr Graham Wright,
stressed the importance
of the consumer goods
industry, highlighting
that it contributed 14.6%
of South Africa’s gross
domestic product,
R18.6bn towards taxes
and R89bn towards
exports.
Wright commended
SAPS’ involvement in the
initiative and stressed
that the ultimate goal was
to reduce violent crimes,
such as truck hijackings.
“For results to be effective,
manufacturers, logistics
and transport companies,
and warehouses need to
coordinate operations
and communicate,” he
concluded.
