The Hong Kong Trade and Development Council (HKTDC) is wooing South Africa investors by highlighting the strategic location of Hong Kong as a gateway to China and thus acting as a super-connector to businesses on the mainland.
Speaking at a networking event held with media and potential investors in Johannesburg this week, HKTDC regional director, Perry Fung, pointed out that South African businesses could use Hong Kong as a springboard from which to launch their exports into China and the rest of Asia, thus reaping the benefits of the revival of the old Silk Road trade route and the One Belt, One Road economic initiative.
“Hong Kong currently acts as South Africa’s gateway into China and the small cosmopolitan city is easier to do business with because of the strong communication networks that exist and because its policies and regulations are more closely aligned with South Africa’s legislative structure,” he said.
Fung pointed out that bilateral trade between South Africa and Hong Kong had grown by almost 20% last year, commenting that there was scope for even further growth.
