Hoax pic of ship sinking in Durban goes viral

An email with photographs of a ship sinking yesterday - supposedly in the Port of Durban - has gone viral.

But wailed Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) “this is a hoax”.

TNPA’s communications manager, Lesley van Duffelen, immediately contacted FTWO, to tell us that the authority had received an email with pictures of a ship in various stages of sinking. “It bore the subject line,” she said, “of ‘Situation at Durban harbour this morning’.”

But this, she added, is a false, malicious hoax email.

And Moshe Motlohi, manager of the Port of Durban, was equally disturbed.

“We assure port users, our clients, cargo owners and the public,” he said, “that the Port of Durban is operating normally and appeal to all to ignore the email.

“Should a situation like this actually occur, a business continuity committee would be convened immediately, and clients notified.”
