In a Government Gazette dated 11 June 2013 the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries published for general information, confirmation of the transfer of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ (Daff) fleet of vessels from the Department of Defence and Military Veterans (DODMV) to Daff with effect from 01 April 2013. The Ministers of Daff and DODMV entered into a Memorandum of Understanding whereby it was agreed that the South African Navy would undertake the shipping management functions of the Daff fleet of vessels with effect from April 01, 2012 and March 31, 2013 and consequently the DAFF fleet of vessels shall be subject to the Defence Act, 2002 (Act No.42 of 2002) and other applicable prescripts. Accordingly with effect from April 01, 2013, the shipping management functions of the Daff fleet shall be placed under the control of Daff and the fleet shall be transferred from DODMV to Daff. The fleet will now be subject to the provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act (Act No.57 of 1951) and other applicable prescripts.
