Second high-profile transport position filled by a woman Ed Richardson THE APPOINTMENT of former finance director-general Maria Ramos as the new chief executive of Transnet is the second high-profile position to be taken by a woman in the transport sector in the past few weeks. Earlier, acting transport minister Jeff Radebe announced the appointment of Wrenelle Stander as the new Director-General (DG) of the national Department of Transport. Before joining the Department of Transport, Stander was the General Manager: Business Development at the Air Traffic Navigation Services Company (ATNS). Ramos replaces Mafika Mkwanazi, who is tipped for a new role either with Matodzi Mining Resources or its subsidiary Letseng. Radebe told journalists that Ramos would formally cross to Transnet to begin the handover period from November 1, 2003, so that she will be in a position to commence her responsibilities as CEO from January 1, 2004. Ramos is widely recognised as one of the driving forces behind South Africa’s good financial management. She was appointed director general of finance in July 1996.
