Logistics group Grindrod Limited has announced the appointment of Kwazi Mabaso as its new chief executive officer (CEO), effective from December 1.
The announcement, made via the JSE’s Stock Exchange News Service (Sens) on Thursday, follows the resignation of outgoing CEO Xolani Mbambo, as disclosed on June 18.
Mabaso, currently the CEO of Grindrod Terminals, will succeed Mbambo, who is stepping down to take up the role of chief financial officer at Kumba Iron Ore by the end of this year. The transition marks a pivotal moment for Grindrod as it continues to pursue its strategic objectives in delivering integrated logistics solutions across sub-Saharan Africa.
“Grindrod conducted a rigorous multifaceted search process, supported by a leading independent executive search team, to appoint a CEO who will lead Grindrod into its next phase of growth and drive forward Grindrod’s strategy of delivering efficient, cost-effective, integrated logistics solutions tailored to our customers’ needs,” the company said in its Sens announcement.
The Board of Directors expressed confidence in Mabaso’s ability to steer the company toward sustainable growth.
Mabaso brings over 24 years of experience across multiple sectors, including mining, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), railway and maritime logistics.
His tenure at Grindrod Terminals, a key segment of the company, has seen him oversee operations across sub-Saharan Africa, managing large-scale projects and driving strategic mergers and acquisitions.
“Kwazi has been central to the finalisation and execution of the large strategic mergers and acquisitions transactions concluded this year in line with Grindrod’s growth strategy,” the company said.
Before joining Grindrod, Mabaso spent a decade at Transnet, where he held senior roles, including executive management of the Richards Bay Terminals and leadership positions across the Durban Container Terminal, Manganese Corridor and North-East Corridor. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Engineering) degree and a postgraduate diploma in Business Administration.
Grindrod board chairperson Cheryl Carolus said the business would continue to pursue substantive growth under his leadership, capitalising on its recent achievements.
“Our commitment to promoting growth, generating opportunity, and supporting positive change remains unwavering,” she said.
The Board also acknowledged Mbambo’s contributions, highlighting his “outstanding delivery on strategy execution”, noting that the company had strengthened its position in the logistics and freight sector, particularly in port and terminal operations, during his tenure.
“As Grindrod enters this new chapter, the Board is confident that, under Kwazi’s leadership, the company will continue to build on its achievements and drive sustainable growth into the future,” Grindrod said in the statement.
