Ghana welcomes power-generating ship

Aysegul Sultan, Karpowership’s power producing ship.

A power-generating ship arrived in Ghana’s main port on Sunday to help mitigate chronic blackouts that are sweeping the West African nation.

The government contracted the ship from independent Turkish producer, Karpowership, to generate 235 MW of electricity daily to help relieve the supply deficit of around 500 MW, Reuters news agency reported.

"This is only one element in our solution, but it is a very useful element," power minister Kwabena Donkor was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Donkor noted that an additional 250 MW would be delivered by Dubai-based independent producer Africa and Middle East Resource Investment next month.
