A police officer appeared in the Germiston Regional Court on Wednesday on kidnapping and extortion charges.
Enoch Motsepe, a detective from Silverton, Pretoria, appeared briefly. The case was postponed to November 11 for further investigation and a formal bail application.
Motsepe is already facing a theft charge in a separate case, the court heard.
Police were looking for five other people in connection with the crime, which took place on Sunday. According to the State, four men entered the victim's home claiming they were police officers. They took jewellery worth about R150 000, a BMW, and a cellphone.
They kidnapped the man and demanded a R100 000 ransom from his family.
Motsepe was arrested on Monday after collecting the ransom money.
Rap singer Kuli Chana was accidentally shot and wounded at the petrol station where the ransom money was collected on Monday.
Police from Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, were tracking the kidnappers and mistook Chana's car for that of the kidnappers.
The victim's family had been instructed to leave the ransom money at the Caltex petrol station on the N1 highway, Midrand.
Bedfordview police arrived at the garage, saw Chana's car and apparently mistook him for the kidnapper. The Star reported that Chana tried to run over police officers who tried to stop him at a roadblock at the petrol station.
Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home, his publicist Sheila Afari said.
Motsepe would remain in police custody.
