Zambia’s geographic position in the centre of the region has been identified as a strength, which makes it a potential regional transport and logistics hub. This creates opportunities throughout the logistics value chain.Programmes will focus on aviation development, road development and maintenance, rail development and maintenance, inland water development and maintenance, inland dry ports development, trade centre development, and warehousing development, according to the recently published Eighth National Development Plan (NDP) 2022-2026.Central to the strategy is the moving of 30% of bulk cargo off the roads onto rail. The NDP commits the government to the “maintenance, development, modernisation and integration of road, rail, air and water transport infrastructure. “This will also contribute to the opening up of rural areas for development and enhancing participation of local communities in the economy. “Among the key measures for the effective implementation of this strategy will be strengthening local-level capacities for planning and development of transport infrastructure,” it states.
