As an aftermath of the recent
major floods in Queensland,
the port of Brisbane has
been silted up with an extra
1.2-million cubic metres of
muck.
According to FTW’s
Australian observer David
Denning, director of Sydneybased
Poseidon Freight, the
flood recovery update included
the result of a survey by the
port authority, which showed
that – instead of the normal
300 000m3 of annual siltation
– the port had approximately
1.5m to remove from port
limits.
This, he added, had reduced
the available depth at the port
from 14 metres to 13m – and
effectively restricted the
draught of vessels using the
port. The dredging vessel
THSD Brisbane is now in
port ready to begin the task of
returning the channel to the
declared 14m depth.
