Construction on the Tambo Springs terminal development seems on track to start in late 2017/early 2018 for completion of the first phase in 2019.
This according to executive manager: branchlines at Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), Elvin Harris, addressing delegates at the annual South African Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff) Congress 2016 which kicked off in Johannesburg today.
He pointed out that TFR would close off the bidding process by the end of this month. “We have received 40 bids so far and hope to be able to make our recommendations to the Transnet board by the end of December this year.”
Harris told FTW Online that the first phase would see a roll-out of capacity of around 140 000 TEUs for the first few years of implementation.
Thereafter, the capacity would increase to 220 000 TEUs and finally, 500 000 TEUs.
