IN A major step forward for the Trans Kalahari Corridor, border operating hours at Pioneer Gate and Skilpadshek border posts have now been extended by two hours to 24:00. Effective since December 14, it’s the culmination of a long process of negotiation for the Trans Kalahari Corridor Management Committee, the body tasked with trade facilitation on the route. Extended hours at the Trans Kalahari/Mamuno border post between Namibia and Botswana have been in effect since October 2000, but the different border operating hours between Namibia/Botswana (06:00 to 22:00) and Botswana/ South Africa (06:00 to 24:00) restricted corridor efficiency. “The extended operating hours bring the border posts into alignment with each other,” a spokesman told FTW.
