Expect Easter vigilance at the borders – C-BRTA

Monitoring, aiding and also the vigilant scrutiny of long-distance road freight and passenger movement across South Africa’s borders will be stepped up during the upcoming Easter weekend, the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA) has said.

The Agency said in its statement for the long weekend that it “urges cross-border road transport operators to remain alert while transporting passengers and goods across the borders to various parts of the continent”.

“As part of the preparations for Easter, the Agency will heighten the deployment of its law Enforcement Unit, the Road Transport Inspectorate (RTI), to major corridors that lead to border posts which link South Africa with neighbouring countries.

“This heightened deployment is meant to match the expected high traffic volumes in respect of freight and passenger vehicles as well as to ensure compliance to relevant road rules,” the C-BRTA says.

The Agency says its intentions and efforts aim to align with Transport Minister Barbara Creecy’s launch of the 2026 Easter Season Road Safety Campaign on Friday, March 20.

She said: “I call on the C-BRTA to intensify monitoring and enforcement along key corridors to ensure full compliance with permit conditions, regulatory requirements and overloading of freight and passengers. We will also prioritise vehicle roadworthiness and fatigue management, and clamp down decisively on illegal operations and non-compliance.”

The Agency said the minister’s “clarion call” had spurred the C-BRTA on to heighten its law enforcement activities and for the RTI to increase its visibility along all major corridors that led to border posts.

Its statement adds that, with the theme, ‘It Begins With Me’, Minister Creecy further indicated that government sent a strong appeal to all motorists and pedestrians to take road safety seriously during this period and beyond.

“The Minister highlighted the need for all road users to observe the rules of the road to curb road accidents and save lives.”

CEO of the C-BRTA, Lwazi Mboyi, indicated that it was important for the Agency to heed the Minister’s call and become visible on all major corridors to ensure safer movements of passengers and goods across borders.

“It is our collective responsibility as law enforcement authorities, motorists and general road users to ensure accident-free roads during the Easter period and beyond. It is for this reason that we have deployed our RTI and heightened our law enforcement operations and related activities on all major routes in the country to ensure compliance.”
