EU more protectionist?

The European Union appears to be taking an increasingly tough stance on phytosanitary requirements for fruit imports. While the black spot issue continues to plague South African citrus producers, the latest target is Indian mangoes. According to fruitportal. com, the EU has banned the fruit – with effect from May 1 – over concerns about contamination from non- European fruit flies. The move has not been a popular one, with one British member of Parliament furious over the lack of consultation, branding the move ‘Euro-nonsense gone mad’, according to the fruitportal.com report.
