Emirates ships record volumes

Mega cargo centre on the cards at Dubai EMIRATES SKYCARGO shipped a record 525 188 tons of cargo internationally last year, an increase of 31.1% over the previous year’s figures This represented 19.6% of the airline’s revenue for the year. “We played our part in this with good figures, always increasing,” says South African cargo manager Kum Naicker. “It’s been a case of good teamwork at this end, capacity loads at most times and the advantage of that excellent offloading and transhipment operation at Dubai International Airport.” With the Freezone Logistics Cargo Terminal (FLC) having been doubled in size to 19000m2 to meet a projected 173% growth in business, Dubai’s cargo terminal handled 924000 tons overall last year. The Dubai government is currently making a multi-million dollar investment in a new, revolutionary expansion to the already futuristic complex that will increase passenger capacity to 60million annually by 2012. A mega cargo centre capable of handling one million tons of freight will provide Emirates with an exclusive terminal from 2007.
