Eight crew members have been rescued from a second vessel that sank in the jurisdiction of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPAS) at the weekend.
The MPAS said it had been alerted to a distress call from the Malaysia-registered tanker, Silver Sincere, which reported that it was taking in water at about 3:40pm (Singapore Time) on Sunday.
“Silver Sincere has since sunk in Singapore territorial waters off Pedra Branca. The master of the vessel had evacuated all the crew from the sinking vessel,” the MPAS said.
“All eight crew have been safely recovered from the vessel’s life rafts by Indonesia-registered freighter Intan Daya 368, which was directed to render assistance. All crew are in healthy condition and will be disembarked at Batu Ampar, Indonesia,” the port authority said.
As part of the search and rescue efforts, MPA also deployed its own craft, together with boats from the Republic of Singapore Navy and the Singapore Police Coast Guard.
The port authority said its coordinated search and rescue phase had been completed and that it had deployed salvage tugs to embark on the vessel recovery phase.
“As a precaution, oil spill response craft have also been activated. Navigational traffic in the Singapore Strait is not affected,” the MPAS said.
The port authority is broadcasting a navigational safety advisory for passing vessels to stay clear of the site of the incident.
