Logistics industry leaders have identified high-potential growth areas for the short to medium term. A number of those responding to an FTW survey on prospects for Africa tipped East Africa as an area of growth. “East Africa is on the rise,” is the way logistics specialist Richard Froud summed up the feeling. The opening of the new container terminal in Walvis Bay is also tipped to be a game changer for the region. “Namibia is poised for strong growth in 2019 with the expansion of the Walvis Bay port and the thrust by concerned parties involved in the Walvis Bay corridor group,” wrote one respondent. But, the optimism comes with the caveat that growth is not guaranteed, and that all those involved in the logistics chains serving the Walvis Bay corridors will need to work together to ensure that the new terminal attracts traffic. Christian Roeder, the chief commercial officer of J&J Transport, said he was “cautiously optimistic due to increasing inefficiencies,” but added “SADC is not helping.”
