PROBLEMS IN the Port of Beira have provided a positive spin-off for logistics company Nomad Freight. “Because the port has not been dredged for some time and bigger ships are therefore unable to call, much of the Beira cargo is now being discharged in Durban, creating a bigger pool of business for South African overborder operators,” says Nomad Freight managing director Simon Avis. He believes authorities are clearly making an effort to improve operational capability at several of the border posts. “At Messina the queue has been taken off the road and put into truck parks which is a good move. “On the Zimbabwe side trucks only move across the border when clearance has been done, all of which has improved the flow enormously. “The extension of opening hours at Komatipoort has also been a big benefit, although short-staffing remains a problem.”
