Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has activated a disaster management plan following yesterday’s severe storm which cause extensive damage to infrastructure and TPT-owned equipment.
TPT is still in the process of determining the full extent of the damage.
“Damage to roads throughout Durban caused by the storm have also impacted operations, with staff having limited access and means to reach the terminals. To ensure the safety of staff, equipment and customers’ cargo, terminals are closed until further notice. Operations will not resume unless it is deemed safe to do so,” a Transnet spokesman said.
“The focus is on firming up recovery plans to be implemented as soon as weather permits. The possible impact on other ports in KZN will be assessed and if need be operations will be halted should the weather pose a threat to safety. Stakeholders will continue to be kept informed and updated by TPT.”
