Release to relevant bodies imminent

THE KEENLY awaited plan of action for the container port of Durban is nearing completion.
Compiled by Portnet - in association with the P&O terminal management currently seconded to the Durban facility - the plan is due for release later this month.
In his update report-back to FTW, Portnet container general manager Ronnie Kingwill described the micro-plan which is being prepared.
It is no grand policy plan, he pointed out, rather a full operational management exercise. It will cover detail like maintenance of straddle carriers; people issues; shift changes and the like, Kingwill said. Very much the nuts-and-bolts of day-to-day operations.
It all relates to issues of operational productivity and its improvement.
The study and its recommendations should be ready soon after mid-month, Kingwill told FTW. After being finalised and signed off by the Portnet management and advisors, he intends to release copies of the plan to all the relevant bodies - including ASL (Association of Shipping Lines); Asabosa (Association of Ships Agents and Brokers of SA); the Container Liner Operators' Forum; Sacob; and the Kwa-Zulu/Natal Chamber of Commerce.
This, Kingwill said, will take the form of a full report on the plan of action. And, we hope, act to re-affirm that we are approaching this (improving port productivity) with due diligence.
