The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to collaborate on the implementation of the new Centre for Trade and Regional Industrialisation programmes.

The centre, launched by the Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies in March this year, was established to strengthen regional trade integration and push industrialisation.

“The centre will promote industrialisation on the African continent thus supporting the continent’s drive to enhance productive capacity,” said director general of the dti, Lionel October, adding that the key objective was to promote the development of regional value-chains.

“Currently Africa’s reliance on exports of primary products is unsustainable and there is a need for a dedicated effort to promote value addition,” he said.
