Qatar Airways is introducing a service that will link Johannesburg and Maputo into the Doha freight hub, which the airline describes as “the best kept secret in the cargo industry”, and which can handle over 750 000 tons of cargo a year. From October 31 Qatar will be operating three flights a week from Doha to Maputo via Gauteng. Qatar has a fleet of freighters serving destinations in Africa, the United States, Europe, the Far and Middle East. The services will help exporters and importers of high value and timesensitive cargo into Mozambique. There is a new cargohandling facility at Maputo International Airport. Maputo will be the fourth new African route to be introduced by Qatar Airways during 2012. The Maputo service will be operated by the airline’s flagship long-haul Boeing 777 aircraft. Other new destinations are the Rwandan capital Kigali, Kilimanjaro Tanzania, and Mombasa, Kenya.
