MSC DEPOTS is adding muscle to its nation-wide network. The company owns and operates empty container handling depots in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The recent approval of a customs licence for the Johannesburg full container depot means the company now operates two customs-licensed depots, the other being an established 15 000 square metre facility adjacent to MSC empty container depot in Durban. These are in close proximity to the port container terminal.
The Durban container depots are equipped with forklift and reach stacker vehicles, and like their counterparts in Johannesburg, have a fully equipped reconditioning and maintenance facility where repairs and maintenance to containers are carried out. This service is available to clients as well.
Older MSC boxes that are no longer required in MSC's international fleet are sold off either 'as is' or repainted to buyers' requirements.
The Durban empty depot is geared to meet the needs of clients in addition to those of the shipping line, with sufficient storage space for clients' containers. And these are treated as though they were those of MSC. The depots are all fully computerised and monitored by a tracking facility.
Nationally MSC has two 45-ton reach stackers in Durban and two additional machines on order for Johannesburg as well as four 18-ton stackers for empties. The total value is R15 million.
