Two traffic officials from the Mthonjaneni Municipality Traffic and Security Department in KwaZulu Natal were sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Eshowe Magistrate’s Court for corruption this week.
The pair stopped and impounded a truck on Melmoth Road in 2015 claiming that it had defective brakes and demanded a R2 500 bribe from the driver.
“The driver informed his employer who in turn contacted the Hawks which led to a sting operation the following day,” said South African Police Service captain Simphiwe Mhlongo. “Both suspects were then arrested and charged for corruption during the operation.”
