An MSC box ship remains under detention by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) following its unauthorised anchoring on 16 May.
The vessel was found approximately 22.5 nautical miles southwest of Sekinchan in the Malacca Strait.
The MMEA's Area Control Centre detected the MSC Olia's suspicious position at 09h20 local time last Friday.
By 13h20 the vessel was confirmed stationary.
A maritime patrol boat was dispatched and found the vessel anchored without prior permission from the Malaysian Maritime Department.
The captain, a 44-year-old Russian national, failed to present any documents authorising the anchorage, constituting a breach under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.
If found guilty, penalties could include a fine of up to MYR100 000 ($23 000), imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
The Maritime Executive reported that the MSC Olia was a container ship built in 2007, with a capacity of 3 760 TEU. It has been owned by MSC since 2021 and was en route from Jakarta to Singapore at the time of the incident.
According to the latest available information, the vessel is docked at Port Klang.
The MMEA is continuing its investigation into the incident, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
