Site work will begin on a new deep-water harbour at Coega near Port Elizabeth on Monday (February 19).
President Thabo Mbeki has also announced that Ngqura/Coega will be the first South African industrial development zone to be gazetted in March.
It is expected to be followed by the East London Industrial Development Zone, which borders on the west bank of the existing harbour and stretches to the airport.
Making the announcement on Coega in his state of the nation address last week, Mbeki said the investment was part of the restructuring of South Africa's rail, road and port infrastructure.
Earlier the Coega Development Corporation and Portnet announced that site preparation work on the Coega port would start on Monday, February 19.
This will entail the construction of a 6,5 kilometre haul road between a quarry and the site of the harbour, as well as site clearing and fencing.
The road will be built to a high standard to accommodate 50-ton trucks that will be carting granite rocks and slabs to be used in the construction of the deep-water port's breakwaters and quays.
