Clearing the decks to make Dar more competitive

The decks are being cleared in the port of Dar es Salaam by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) in order to make the port more competitive against the likes of Durban. Petroleum import operations are being moved to the northern port of Tanga in order to free up capacity for other traffic. MOL and MSC call on Tanga The harbour is competing against the ports of Mombasa, Richards Bay, Durban, Beira and Walvis Bay for cargo in and out of the Copperbelt and the rest of the sub-region, according to the director general of the Tanzanian Energy and Water Utility Regulatory Authority (EWURA). Efforts by TPA to reduce congestion and improve productivity in the port of Dar es Salaam are already paying off. On a recent visit to Zambia FTW found that a number of shippers were using Dar es Salaam in preference to Durban or the other harbours in the region. It is geared up to become more competitive. In September 2014 TPA acquired funding support for a US$565-million project to strengthen and deepen berths 1-7 and to dredge the channel. The TPA investment is in support to the Tanzanian government’s version of Operation Phakisa. Part of the Big Results Now (BRN) Vision 2025 vision is to increase the capacity of the port to 28 million tons by 2020. CAPTION Dar es Salaam
