Cape exporters bear brunt of problem

THE PROBLEM of getting EUR1 certificates stamped and passed by customs is one that especially applies to Cape Town, according to Gavin Cooper, Western Cape chairman of the SA Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF). “This was borne out by the fact that - at our meeting with Table Bay customs last October - the matter was raised. “We were advised that Cape Town handles 2 500 EUR1s per month, with Johannesburg and Durban only handling 100 or so each month.” However, Cooper added, the same problem applies in Port Elizabeth. “I know that there, in an area which also exports large amount of fruit, exporters have also suffered the same the problem as Cape Town in getting their EUR1s processed timeously by customs.”
