South Africa is expecting a bumper maize crop which could suppress domestic prices in the upcoming months and enhance the country’s maize exports, a report from the National Agricultural Marketing Council has revealed.
According to the report released earlier this month a ton of white maize is selling at R2 589, up R1, while a ton of yellow maize is selling at R2 701, up R5. Wheat prices declined by R11 with a ton currently selling at R5 389 but still higher than the previous week.
A report from the South African Grain Information Service (Sagis) has shown that South African yellow maize exports as of June 19 this year stood at 227 649 tons with Korea and Taiwan importing 12 942 tons and 32 088 tons respectively and Eswatini and Zimbabwe importing 1 862 tons and 1 407 tons respectively.
