A galvanised drum for the transport of South African fruit juice concentrates is offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional options, according to packaging company PackSolve. Most juice is transported in large drums over 200 litres each, says value chain manager Jonathan Luff“But once you've dented the drum, you have to recondition and paint it again – which is costly.According to Luff, PackSolve’s galvanised drums aren’t as susceptible to visible damage. “We estimate that it can be used seven to eight times – which is based on how much damage the drum can take before it’s no longer useful.According to stats quoted by PackSolve referencing Fruit Juice Focus, in 2016 SA exported nearly 34 000 tonnes of orange juice – more than the next ten continental exporters combined.
