An interim truck staging area will be constructed in Cape Town this year, but it remains unclear where or what the capacity will be.While the concept and detailed construction drawings for the project were to be finalised during the last week of February, they will only be presented to Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) management in March, and then to affected stakeholders in April.According to a spokesman for the Cape’s Port Liaison Forum, the need for a truck staging area at the port is dire and hopes are high that the process can be speeded up.“At this stage we don’t know where the truck staging area will be or how many trucks will be handled at the facility.”During a presentation to the forum, representatives of TNPA said several areas had been identified within the port precinct and once a decision had been made on which area, a clearer answer could be given on capacity and facilities.“This is only an interim solution and therefore has to be cost efficient,” said the representative, indicating that a permanent staging area was still on the cards, but would be a long-term project.Civil works and construction for the interim facility are expected to be completed by the end of September.TNPA has indicated the goal is for the interim truck staging area to be operational by early October.
